What it’s Like to Be Married to a Blogger – Mrs Under

29 Apr

“Would you write a post for my blog?” he said.

“No” I said.

Then he tried using some male smarts, cooked me dinner and fed me wine and who could resist that? I had two conditions (1) I write the post entirely in my own words and press publish without any creative interference (2) I choose the topic. He seemed reluctant and I quite enjoyed watching him squirm but he agreed to my terms and conditions.

I had never read a blog when he announced he was going to start writing one a little over a year ago, in fact I don’t think he had. He had just taken over the primary carer reigns for Max and I thought it might be good for him to have something to occupy his mind. He had always enjoyed writing and is the only person I know who still writes letters to people, real handwritten letters. It can’t do any harm, can it? In all honesty I suspected his initial enthusiasm might fizzle out.

He wrote and he wrote and he wrote. He would share the posts with friends and family in an attempt to bridge the considerable gap we had put between them and us. It made him happy and that in turn made me happy. He started to get some recognition for his writing and it was hard not to love the complete and natural shock he displayed when he received his first paid piece. The thing about Matt is that he has never really known what he wanted to do with his life, he used to hate going to parties and being asked what he did for a living. He was a creative trapped in an office with no release.

Matt has always had an addictive personality and blogging became his fix and he has quite the appetite. Outside of Max it became the dominant topic of conversation in our house. It also began to dominate his free time and his not so free time. I would come home from a long day at work to discover a fairly derelict looking home, it’s fair to say he is a more passionate writer than doer of housework. He sometimes sneaks off to the bedroom and before long I would hear the noise that I am now so accustomed to, the tap tap tapping of the keyboard. I am still trying to get my head around how all that time on Facebook constitutes work but he assures me it is and if it is then he works very, very hard indeed!

To his credit he does not let it interfere with his Max time and when he is on duty he is just Daddy without the Down Under bit. He and Max have an incredible relationship and he is an amazing father. He assures me that all the hard work will pay off and that he is doing something he loves that will ultimately benefit all of us. I’m very proud of what he is achieving and he no longer shies away from being asked what he does for a living, in fact he tells everybody.

We have recently agreed on a few ground rules and time restraints so that I get to enjoy a bit of him too. I do feel a little neglected at times but he makes up for it when we do spend time together. If you do happen to notice he is spending a little too much time in the virtual world, you have my full permission to give him a stern telling off and send him packing back to me.

Yours sincerely,

Anna – the artist formerly known as Mrs Under.

Lovely to ‘meet’ you Anna – I frequently get a giggle from your hubby’s writing – As a SAHM I feel time poor and I read only half a dozen blogs and this is one of them!

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 9:43 am #

Thank you Wendy, lovely to ‘meet’ you too. High praise indeed! He does have a nice turn of phrase, it worked on me : )

  2. Slapdash Mama April 29, 2013 at 9:30 am #

Hello Anna! I think my husband would agree with much you have written!

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 9:45 am #

Hello to you too. I think compared to most he is not actually too obsessive, he wont like me saying this but he doesn’t have a smart phone so he is pretty limited. I might pop over and have a read of your lovely blog now, its quite fun this blogging isn’t it?

  3. About Me April 29, 2013 at 9:37 am #

Great piece Mrs Under. Its nice to get a look at the other side, un-edited version 😉
As a WAHM and blogger I really enjoy reading this blog, such a fun look at parenting.

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 9:47 am #

Thank you very much! I went easy on him : ) He makes parenting look fun too, especially when I’m getting ready to leave for work, sob, sob.

Nice to ‘meet’ you Anna. I have one question.. What do you think of DDU’s new boots?

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 9:49 am #

Ooh your putting me on the spot now……….he has sold me the practical side but not the aesthetic one ; ) Sorry hubby

      • Mrs P April 29, 2013 at 12:17 pm #

        My thoughts as well 🙂
        Welcome to the family!

So nice to read the other point-of-view! Be grateful at his lack of smartphone Anna, my Supertrucker curses mine! And oh I laughed at working on Facebook. My children and hub would tell you that I work very very hard on Facebook too. Sometimes I even do 😉

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 10:34 am #

I think the Smart Phone might be imminent Kate, he keeps hinting : ) Apparently the FB stuff is very necessary and its quite nice having something I can moan at him about

What a lovely post and so nice to ‘meet’ you Anna. A great blogger always has an even great home support – so Matt, you are very lucky!! xx

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 10:35 am #

Thank you Mrs D and I couldn’t agree more, he is very lucky ; )

  7. Have a laugh on me April 29, 2013 at 11:48 am #

I have to say I’m a little bit excited about ‘meeting’ you Anna, thanks for this post, I adore your honesty. And I often wonder if my husband thinks the same about me, eg when he hears the tap tapping. I have no doubt that all your husband’s hard work will pay off. I’m not expert, but I’m a writer/journo and he’s got it, now he just has to wait until others realise or are persuaded to see how good he is! Emily

    • daddownunder April 29, 2013 at 11:57 am #

What a lovely comment Emily. I just read it to Matt and he is smiling from ear to ear. Thank you, Anna

      • Have a laugh on me April 29, 2013 at 12:12 pm #

Oops I see a typo in what I wrote! “I’m not an expert” – just pretend you didn’t see that, sure you got the gist though!

  8. evilgeniusmum April 29, 2013 at 12:26 pm #

Ha! He has convinced you of the benefit of Facebook!! Sucker!! Although, I have to admit – where some see addiction, I admire his focus on being able to sit down and write. Obviously, it is helped by the amazing support from you (and Max – Max does provide some excellent material). I, on the other hand, succumb to chocolate and foot-rubs rather than the coercion to type. And I’m not telling EG Dad otherwise!!

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:08 am #

Shhhh EG Mum any more talk like that and I will have to give up the keyboard for nights on the sofa eating chocolate and rubbing feet, hang on a minute that sounds pretty good

  9. Bruce Devereaux April 29, 2013 at 12:58 pm #

Wowsers. That might have been Tracey writing about me lol nicely written Anna

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:09 am #

Hey Brucey, this is DDU not MDU, sheesh its going to get confusing – yes I suspect there ar elots of nodding blogger other half’s

  10. Richard Farrar April 29, 2013 at 1:03 pm #

Well done Anna. You have a nice turn of phrase as well. How nice to read bout your life together from the other’s point of view. I wonder how many working Dads feel the same way as you do? I used to be a SAHM in the day when it got very funny looks and comments in the mining town of Ashington in Northumberland and I can tell you that your Matt has always been a special person and you are lucky to have him. The two of you seem to be doing a fabulous job and I’m sure Max will grow up well balanced and be a trail blazer in his own way. I look forward to more wonderful blogs from Matt and you.

    • Richard Farrar April 29, 2013 at 1:05 pm #

Sorry. My fingers didn’t do what my brains was telling them to di. I was not a SAHM. I was a SAHD.

  11. mogletho April 29, 2013 at 2:02 pm #

Great to meet you and always love hearing from the other half! In fact you have given me some food for thought about getting my husband to write something for me!

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:10 am #

The best bit Martine was that I get to put my feet up and strecth out on the sofa for a couple of hours ; )

  12. Deb - An Inspirational Journey April 29, 2013 at 7:14 pm #

Nicely written Anna, you have a bit of a writing talent there too 🙂

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:11 am #

I will pass on the compliments Deb, her head will start getting big at this rate ; )

  13. iSophie April 29, 2013 at 11:05 pm #

I loved reading this, it is so refreshing to hear the other side of this blogging gig. Though my hubby is an app programmer so he is worse then me!

    • iSophie April 29, 2013 at 11:05 pm #

Oh and #teamIBOT was here 😉

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:13 am #

  14. Shelley April 29, 2013 at 11:26 pm #

Awesome first blog Mrs Under. I look forward to reading many more guest posts from you. Thanks for encouraging your hubby’s writing. He’s pretty bloody good!

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:30 am #

Hi Shelley, thank you very much and I hope there will be a few more because I rather enjoyed it. And yes I think he is pretty bloody good too, dont tell him that though ; )

  15. Julie April 30, 2013 at 12:10 am #

Lovely to meet you! So good to hear the other side. Don’t forget if you can’t beat them join them phrase. My partner wanted to know why I found this world of blogging so interesting, so he made his own blog. A fashion blog (he is a photographer) but now we also have blogging in common.
Maybe you should become a regular, just to keep him on his toes?

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:21 am #

Hey Julie this is Matt, by popular demand Mrs Under is now a regular monthly poster. I am indeed on my toes : )

  16. nicolekristen April 30, 2013 at 2:58 am #

Nice to meet you Anna 🙂 I loved reading your post and seeing things from the “other side” of the blogger – something you rarely get a chance to do. Glad that Matt has such wonderful support from you 🙂
Will we be hearing from you again??
    Nicole

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:22 am #

Hey Nicole, thank oyu very much for all your lovely words. I have managed to persuade him to give me a monthly guest slot, I really quite enjoyed it

  17. JodiGibson (@JFGibsonWriter) April 30, 2013 at 3:11 am #

The wonderful behind her man. Lovely to ‘meet’ you. Think you should make this a regular thing 🙂

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:24 am #

I’ve never felt so popular Jodi : ) I’ve used my womenly charms to get him to surrender a monthly guest slot all for me and what I want to say

  18. LettheWildflowersGrow April 30, 2013 at 4:16 am #

    Hello Anna.
My husband made the very same comment a few nights ago as I was typing away.
”Are you Blogging?” I was of course, but now everyone in my family including the kids seem to be able to tell the difference between my being on Facebook or Pinterest, and the sound of my typing when I Blog.
Loved your insight into being married to a Blogger, especially since majority of Bloggers are female, and we already know what our husbands think!
Have fun doing this monthly.I for one can not wait to read more 🙂

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:26 am #

Aaaah thanks hun. I give him a hard time but as long as it doesnt interfere with Max I fully support what he does. And yes I intend to have some fun with the monthly slot.

  19. Lorraine April 30, 2013 at 4:24 am #

So good to hear from you Anna! Matt might have some competition on his hands. 🙂

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:28 am #

Who are you representing Lorraine?? ; ) I will pass on your kind words

  20. Nat @ Natalia familia April 30, 2013 at 5:05 am #

Hi Anna! So great to hear your honest perspective! I really enjoy your husbands writing when it pops up on IBOT. Turns out you are both really good at it! I give my husband one posts month to write as an opportunity to feel involved in my little obsession and also a chance to vent about it all to my readers. So far so good though, he’s only written about our dog! 😀

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:29 am #

Thnak you so much. The dog sounds like a nice safe area Nat : )

  21. Zanni Arnot April 30, 2013 at 5:33 am #

Nice work Anna. Nice to “meet” you. 🙂

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 5:40 am #

Thank you Zanni, love your pretty heart logo!

  22. redlandcitygirl April 30, 2013 at 8:14 am #

So lovely to hear from the other side, I’m sure my hubster would be nodding his head in agreement if he read this – maybe I should show it to him so he knows there are other blogging widows/widowers out there!

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 8:35 am #

Thank you and yes show your hubby, safety in numbers : )

  23. Nee Say (@NeeSayer) April 30, 2013 at 10:12 am #

I’m sure you’ve struck a chord with every blogger spouse out there. Sometimes blog-ownership can become all-consuming & it’s good to have a firm hand drag you back into the land of the living. Lovely that you support him so much as well though.

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 10:17 am #

Yes lots of feedback that I’m not alone in feeling a little overwhelmed by the amount of time that goes into a blog. I think he’s good at it though and it makes him happy – you can’t put a price on that

  24. EssentiallyJess April 30, 2013 at 10:47 am #

I’m impressed Mrs Under! I reckon you could give him a run for his money in the writing stakes!
I asked my husband to write a post for me.
    I’m still waiting….

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 10:55 am #

Ha ha thanks Jess, I will make sure he sees that comment : )

  25. yinyangmother April 30, 2013 at 10:49 am #

Hi Anna – nice to ‘meet’ you. I’m only new to IBOT and to getting to know your hubby (that doesnt’ sound so good) but I can say my hubby (and my daughter) have the same reservations about what this blogging thing is all about. Connecting, I say, which can’t be bad – we need more connection in the world. I think your husband is a very brave man in a blogging world dominated by women. He deserves to shine for his bravery and his talent and you deserve thanks for backing him up.

    • daddownunder April 30, 2013 at 10:58 am #

Thank you and yes your right it definitely takes bravery to bare your soul the way he has done and I commend him for that.

  26. minsmash April 30, 2013 at 11:49 am #

Lovely to meet you Anna! You did a great job with this blog post! DDU will have to watch out 😉 but I have to admit…we all enjoy seeing parenthood from a dad’s perspective! I see you’ve got some date nights coming up. DDU has asked for suggestions – hopefully you will have some lovely romantic outings coming up! 🙂

    • daddownunder May 1, 2013 at 4:50 am #

Hello and thank you, its been so much fun! Yes I am very, very excited about the upcoming date nights, he wont tell me what he’s got lined upbut I’m sure we will have a blast

  27. Kassey April 30, 2013 at 9:46 pm #

What a treat for us! And now a monthly post too.

I’m always fascinated by the other half of the equation, so you’ve whet my appetite for more. Thanks Anna

  28. Lisa@RandomActsOfZen May 1, 2013 at 4:20 am #

Hey Anna, it’s good to get a glimpse into the other side of a blogging household. You should be very proud of your clever writing husband, he’s got a talent.
I would love it if you made this a regular contribution, good to see the balance.
    Lisa 🙂

    • daddownunder May 1, 2013 at 4:48 am #

Thank you so much Lisa, yes I am really proud of him and he does work very hard on it. And yes I have twisted his arm to let me come back again – I quite enjoyed it!

  29. rhian @melbs May 1, 2013 at 7:42 am #

Lovely to hear from you Mrs U, I really enjoyed reading your post and look forward to reading your regular posts. I thought about asking my husb to post on my blog but he’s an accountant – perhaps not 🙂
