Being a stay at home parent gives you all the reasons you could ever possibly wish for not to exercise. Too tired, too stressed, too terrorised. Keeping fit is a tall order for the stay at home parent but its something I try to do.
I used to be quite the sportsman back in the day, back in the day is an expression I use that actually means before I became a parent. I ran along lung bursting roads, cycled up steep thigh burning mountains, swam in icy willy shrinking lakes and generally embraced a bit of sweat and pain.
These days the activities may have changed to cater for my plus one but I still find ways to exercise most days. Instead of looking at Max and seeing a toddler shaped exercise problem I began to see him as the solution. I started to look at the parks not just as a playground for Max but a playground for Dad too. I became that man/prat who does sneaky step ups on the bench when he thinks the mums aren’t looking, giving Max his first encounter with Dad based embarrassment.
Parents are a selfless bunch and often sacrifice their own passions for the good of the family. I hope to share some of the techniques that allow me to commit to family and fitness.
